The role of Project Manager (PM) is the one, which is at the front, the most feasible and exposed. Project Manager impacts the Team widely. This is Project Manager’s role to organise the project, shapes the communication, gain the high level knowledge on a project to able to organize the work effectively around the project scope. Project Manager works with a Team assigned to a project, where Team’s roles are named and crucial at different stages of project work. Team Members follow the Project Manager, where his/her style of working and dedication set the tone for the entire collaboration.
With this regard someone may say that PM shines in a Team. I like to see it another way (and I say it from my experience, working in this roles for years already).
Project Manager is first of all responsible for delivering results expected by project stakeholders. This way PM should not shine, but should be effective in leading a Team towards the successful ending. The Team should shine, feeling the confidence the project is under control and in effective management hands of the PM.
Project Manager should be present, close to the project Team and should have time for a project. Leading style of working is important as it provides guidance, feeling of belonging, understanding of project goals and value to be delivered. The great result is when Team Members shine, but they know in the background that without the Project Manager they would not be in the same good place at the end of the project.
